Outside Over There by Maurice Sendak

By Joanna in Uncategorized

It’s no coincidence that my personal favorite Sendak work is Outside Over There. When I was five years old, Maurice Sendak came to Houston to work with the Houston Grand Opera on set design for one of their operas, and seeing as how my father was an opera singer with the company, my mom jumped on this opportunity to get us signed copies.

For my oldest brother, she chose Where the Wild Things Are. For my other brother, she chose In the Night Kitchen. For me: Outside Over There.

My brothers were 15 and 12 at the time, and couldn’t have cared less (as is perhaps evident from the fact that both of their copies are still at my parents’ house), but I was already really into books, and I was over the moon. A real signed copy of a hardcover book! With my name in it and everything!

I would sit in my bedroom and tenderly turn the pages, reading and rereading the book over and over.

The story is about a young girl, named Ida, who is watching her baby sister one afternoon when some goblins sneak into the window and steal her sister away to be their goblin bride, and Ida has to go get her back. Sound familiar? The book was a heavy influence on the 1986 Jim Henson and George Lucas film Labyrinth.

The storyline and language is captivating, sure, but what really separates this book from the pack are the breathtakingly beautiful illustrations, so I will just let them speak for themselves:

The shading on the foot in that bottom illustration just destroys me. It’s so perfect.

I read this one to Milo a couple of times a week, but unlike the rest of his books, which live in a bin at his height, this gets stored up on an adults-only shelf. Milo knows this, and thus treats the book with the appropriate reverance when I take it down to read to him. He touches the pages a little more gently. It’s a great privilege to pass on the love of books to my child. Hopefully they will be his great friends and comfort, as they have been for me.

Books to Help with Speech Delay

By Joanna in Uncategorized

I was wondering if any parents might have tips on books we could get Milo to help with speech delay.
Milo has a gigantic vocabulary, but a lot of his words are made up and don’t sound anything like the real word. We only know what he means from context. For instance, he continued to say [...]

Dandelion by Don Freeman

By Joanna in Uncategorized

I happened upon Dandelion while sifting through picture books at my favorite little bookstore here in my neighborhood (St. Johns Booksellers), and I was only three pages into the book before I knew that Milo had to have it. The plot centers around a lovable lion who gets an invitation to a casual tea party from [...]

Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

By Joanna in Uncategorized

I fell in love with Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes when I was teaching at a Montessori school in Austin, TX. When you read the same twenty books—none of which you chose yourself—over and over again, day in and day out, you really come to appreciate the very few of them which are as carefully and lovingly [...]

Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt

By Joanna in Uncategorized

When Milo was born, our friends Kevin and Rosalie sent us Scaredy Squirrel by Mélanie Watt because their sons loved it, and I have been waiting ever since for Milo to finally get to the age where he can appreciate this story. That time seems to be now, since he has brought it to me [...]
